Personal Profile
Background
Whilst working, a teacher and counsellor observed counselling qualities in the way I was working and recommended I consider the counselling profession, this together with my own desire for personal growth led me on the training journey.
Training and qualifications
I began with the Bridge Pastoral Foundation's counselling course and completed their three modules in 2003. I continued with the ABC certificate in counselling and completed in 2004. I was then hooked and determined to become a counsellor, this led me onto the diploma which I attained through the Institute of Pastoral Counselling in 2006. Because I could see that the profession is becoming more academic I challenged myself and attained a Masters degree in counselling by 2008. I completed the journey so far by completing a teaching diploma in 2009.
Experience
During the counselling training I worked with adult students who had learning difficulties and/or disabilities. I have worked for 5 years as a counsellor with a woman's aid organisation, seeing women with a range of issues including domestic violence, abuse, bereavement and loss, relationship issues, child concerns and aiding them with their growth and development. Alongside that appointment I continue to work with a Christian counselling service experiencing people with a wide range of issues. Over the last two years I continue working as a mentor with undergraduate students who have additional health problems, and during the last year I have been engaged in a private practice responding to people who contact me directly and through employment organisations.
Work Approach
Counselling approach
I highly value the individual and work in a person centred way, focusing on the individual's needs and wants in a non-judgemental and confidential atmosphere. Through listening, acceptance and enabling exploration of the issues individual's are enabled to gain a greater understanding of them self and determine how they want to move forward. I work with clients both at home and in rented rooms within a counselling service.
