Personal Profile

From a background in nursing, I commenced my counselling studies in the early 90s and graduated with a Diploma of Higher Education (with distinction) in Counselling from John Moores' University in 1997.  I was accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) in 2004 and I am a UKRCP Registered Independent Counsellor/Psychotherapist

I have gained further qualifications in Working with Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Counselling Young People, Brief Therapy, Training, Groupwork and Stage 1 Certificate in Teaching in Further Education.  I am currently studying for the M A in Counselling Studies at the University of Chester.

I have experience of counselling within education, having worked as a college counsellor in a further education college, where I provided counselling to students and members of staff and I have also worked in primary care as a counsellor in general practice.  In addition, I have worked within the field of substance misuse and have facilitated groups and workshops.

Work Approach

My approach to counselling is based on person-centred principles, in that I believe each client has his/her own individual answers and solutions to unique difficulties and problems, but, sometimes, these can be difficult to find and the client may seriously doubt that this is even possible.  Counselling can help by allowing the client to see what is happening from a different perspective, in the same way as  unjumbling pieces of a personal jigsaw and creating a complete picture, which gives life focus again.  My aim is to assist the client to do this so that he/she can become his/her "own personal counsellor" of the future, confident in his/her own abilities to listen to his/her own inner voice and choose the best decision to take.
