Personal Profile
As a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, I have a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, as well as Masters and undergraduate training in psychology. Following qualification I first worked in older people's services, working with individuals with dementia or struggling with depression, anxiety or other mental health issues, also working with families and staff groups whom were involved in supporting the individuals concerned, to support quality of life improvement and effective treatment. I left this post to take the helm of a chronic pain management service, which I have been the Head of ever since, leading the clinical team, therapies delivery and service development, as well as continuing to deliver complex psychological therapy for those with the most severe problems within the service. In recent years I have worked with NICE, contributing to the writing of the Lower back Pain guideline (published in 2009), as an acknowledged clinical expert in pain management. I am also regularly approached to input into national consultations on pain management and chronic pain issues.
As an adjunct to my current full time NHS post, I also run a private practice, providing specialist psychological therapy focused on improving people's abilities to manage their pain, adjusting to the difficult circumstances and challenges faced, so that stress can be reduced and and their quality of their life improved - with the ultimate aim of enabling them to then live fulfilling lives despite pain.
Work Approach
The therapy I offer can best be understood as cognitive behavioural therapy. However, I draw on a variety of psychological principles and theories in my clinical practice, drawing on a broad knowledge base of various different therapeutic approaches and clinical expertise gained over the years, to tailor an approach suitable to meet the needs of the person (i.e. the individual), that sits in front of me at any given time. Broadly, I generally consider how life circumstances experienced affect each person I see in terms of how they view themselves, how they think, how this makes them feel, behave, live within their relationships, and in their broader world, where all of this information can then be drawn on to highlight the best way forward for the person, to break the cycles they are currently trapped in, breaking cycles of unhappiness, discontent or distress.
About
As mentioned above, I run a private practice alongside my NHS work, running my main private clinic at Abbey Sefton Hospital, Aintree, Liverpool (http://www.abbeyhospitals.com/liverpool-hospital.htm). As part of this private practice, I offer psychological assessment, psychological therapy and rehabilitation services, alongside clinical supervision and consultation.
Areas of particular clinical specialism include pain management, sports injury rehabilitation and facilitation of psychological adjustment and improved management in response to long term conditions.
Further professional and practice details can be seen on the British Psychological Society Directory of Chartered Psychologists (via www.bps.org.uk).
