Personal Profile
I originally trained as a civil engineer but slowly moved towards working in further education with groups of disaffected 16 year olds. I later did individual work with adults returning to education.
In 1991 I trained as a volunteer community mediator and a year later was involved in training a group of new mediators. In 1997 I set up my own business and since then have trained hundreds of people to work as mediators in communities, organisations and prisons.
My work has expanded to include many aspects of interpersonal communication and I have worked in commercial, public and voluntary sector organisations.
I am inspired by an array of influences, starting with Creative Listening; a discipline taught to me first in 1983 by the wonderful and unusual Rachel Pinney who developed this discipline.
I have trained in Aikido since 1988 and use both its principles and some of the physical practice within my work.
Since 1997, I have been an informal student of Process Oriented Psychology, which has supported me with both considerable personal development and in drawing together different strands of my experience.
Underpinning all of my work and approach is the concept that the greater the amount of awareness we can bring into our own lives and their circumstances, the more thoughtfully and ably we will act.

Work Approach
I use ‘the eye of the storm’ as a metaphor for doing and being (the storm and the eye). The ‘storm’ is chaos, movement and activity, the ‘eye’ is quiet, reflection and centeredness.
Most of the time we pay attention to the storm, to what we have to do, who we are doing it with and when we have to do it.
If things are going well then we just tick along with our ‘doing’. When things are not going well we can get into negative spirals and feel taken over by the things we have to do.
My experience is that when I notice and visit ‘the eye’ I have an opportunity to pause and get a moment of perspective. This can help my life to feel richer, I have more access to my creativity and I can re-enter the storm in a more positive state.
I believe that the eye is always present within the storm, sometimes though we lose sight of it. If I am in the storm but can get centered I become more fluid and able.
In my work I try to both model his behaviour and help others do the same.
My interventions use the idea that every disturbance contains the seeds of its own solution and using these principles you can move from feeling stuck and limited to becoming creative and dynamic.
My work with both straightforward and challenging situations is about supporting both the chaos and the stillness. When both aspects are present it becomes easier to view conflict as an opportunity rather than a threat.
When we remember that ‘the eye’ exists and when we practice ways of accessing it we can develop our creativity.
We can see conflict as integral to effective and creative organizations and relationships.
Conflict healthily addressed and confidently expected will promote growth and innovation, new ways of thinking and ingenious options.
Conflict asks us to take risks, to take initiatives, and to tolerate uncomfortable emotions. It requires us to be emotionally mature.
Conflict requires us to make ourselves vulnerable. It requires us to look for assistance and support.
Managing conflict requires us to imbue our organisation and our relationships with trust and openness.
