Personal Profile
I am a BACP Accredited counsellor/psychotherapist. I have 30 years experience of working with people in distress. My work initially was with the Samaritans where I spent many years working with people face to face and on the phone. I then began my professional counselling training. I also worked in a women's resource centre where sexual abuse and domestic violence were the main presenting issues for female clients.
Additionally, I spent two years working for Cruse bereavement care, in a local charity. I also work with young people over the age of 13, and have enhanced CRB clearance. I enjoy working with younger clients and relate to them authentically. I also work with individuals with general counselling concerns.
My training is from Certificate to Diploma level; and more recently an MA in Counselling & Psychotherapy (Merit) from the University of East London. I keep myself up to date andinformed by attending training days/workshops and in reading professional literature and research studies to support my work. I receive regular clinical supervision for my practice and continue learning about myself and others.
I am passionate about the values of counselling and psychotherapy as a way forward for everyone. Last year I graduated with an MA in Counselling & Psychotherapy from the University of East London. My dissertation was based on a phenomenological inquiry of Diploma in Counselling students expereinces in training. A topic which is generally under reported in research studies.
Work Approach
My way of working respects the individual. I prefer to build a relationship with my clients so that I may best metaphorically get alongside them to understand how they feel about what is going on for them during the process of counselling. Often in the context of talking, clients discover what is causing them pain and distress. Sometimes it's an issue that needs to be accepted, or cannot be resolved; in unpicking these ideas and dilemmas, the issues are then more able to be examined and discussed in a safe environment without judgement from myself.
My core professional values are those of the BACP framework and its code of ethics. My personal philosophy is in meeting the client where they are, and in learning how they perceive their experience to be. This allows the therapeutic relationship to develop in a planned series of collaborative confidential sessions with the aim of gaining mastery, and leading a more meaningful life with a greater sense of control within their relationships with themselves, and others.
