Personal Profile

I completed my training as a Relate counsellor in 1991 and subsequently worked as a couple counsellor for Relate, a GP surgery counsellor and a school counsellor.  During this time I undertook further training in a wide variety of counselling related areas. As a Relate trainer I ran a wide variety of courses on counselling, personal relationships , stress management , parenting, and interpersonal skills. I worked as an Associate Lecturer on the Counselling Programme at Wiltshire College, teaching introductory, intermediate and diploma level courses. I have recently completed a four year training in Advanced Relational TA Psychotherapy. I now have my own private practice in counselling and psychotherapy ( willowtreecounselling.co.uk), seeing individuals aged 16+ and couples.

Prior to training as a counsellor I took a degree in English Literature and a Diploma in Vocational Guidance before working in the field of careers  advice and guidance in  both local authority and university settings

Work Approach

My work as a counsellor and psychotherapist is informed by my training. my experience and my own personal history. I subscribe to the core values of Transactional Analysis ( TA)-that people are OK ( i.e. every individual is of value and worthy of respect): that everyone can think for themselves: that everyone can change( given the necessary resources and support.)

My practice is based upen open communication and the establishment of mutually agreed goals. My aim is to build a therapeutic relationship in which clients will feel safe enough and supported enough to explore their problems and difficulties, to gain understanding and insight  and to identify and implement the changes that will help them to move forward.

My background and training allows me to draw on a wide variety of knowledge skills and experience in order to adapt my approach to fit the needs and circumstances of each client. One therapeutic  size certainly does not fit all as far as I am concerned!  After a careful initial assessment . I offer short, medium or long term work according to the needs and wishes of the client.
