Personal Profile
My professional background is in Social Work, firstly in a ChildrensTherapeutic Community for seven years, and then fieldwork, firstly with Children and Families. This work involved working with juvenile offenders, using school based interventions and family therapy. I then moved to Adult Mental Health services and I began formal training in Counselling/ Psychotherapy in 1990 as I saw it as the most helpful response to the distress I encountered. I have worked successfully with most presentations of mental distress. I have had a small private practice for many years, offering Counselling, Supervision and Training. I am a Member of the BACP and work to their Code of Ethics.
My Counselling training has been with the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body, and my Supervision training has been with Birmingham University. I have developed my therapeutic skills and understanding through many and varied settings, and have worked with a wide range of problems. I maintain my formal professional development. I have supervised Counsellors, Social Workers and allied Health professionals over the past 15 years.
Work Approach
My therapeutic stance is one that embraces Relational, Humanistic and Integrative ideas. I work from the premise that our emotional life, with all its conflicts, pain and joys, is created by the history of our relationships. By Integrative I mean that, in order to address issues brought to therapy, I may use ideas from T.A., Gestalt, or Psychodynamic sources. I work in a Humanistic manner in that I respect a wide spectrum of spiritual and other beliefs that clients bring to our sessions, and an understanding of these beliefs may become part of our discussions. Any use of technique, such as internal dialogues, will be fully explained and agreed if we decide to use it to address issues brought to therapy.
I approach this work with deep respect for the varied experiences and backgrounds people bring to our work together. I work from the premise that the relationship formed during Counselling is far more important than formal theories or tecniques.
