Personal Profile
I have a particular interest in working with young people and adults who use self-injury to cope with overwhelming emotional pain; I also specialise in working with people who live with chronic illness and use a variety of techniques to help them to manage their lives more effectively.
In my practice I work with people who are experiencing all kinds of difficulties that stop them from experiencing their lives as fully as they might - this includes depression, anxiety, bereavement, redundancy, 'empty nest' syndrome, relationship difficulties, alcohol and drug problems as well as deeper seated problems relating to childhood and/or adolescence.
I work with both short term and long term clients - it's good to have a mix!
I am working towards accreditation with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and hope to embark on further training to develop further as a practitioner when the accreditation process is completed.
I also teach mindfulness meditation which is particularly helpful for those who experience anxiety, stress or depression.
In the past I have mentored young people through Connexions and trained as part of the spiritual care team attached to the chaplaincy at the Royal Free Hospital.
I believe that my own journey through therapy has given me the ability to get alongside the people that I am working with and to have empathy at a very deep level with my clients.
Work Approach
When I chose my the course that would allow me to train as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I chose one that used an integrative approach. This allowed me to learn about a wide variety of theories and ways of working so that I could develop my own integration which would allow me to work in the best way for my clients and the way in which I can be most effective.
What this means in practice in that I use a psychodynamic understanding of human development and an empathic connection with the client. The therapeutic relationship is vital to my work and the ability to establish a 'working alliance' is crucial. This form of integration allows me to work in both short and long term counselling and psychotherapy
I use the Ethical Framework of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy to guide my practice and see it as key to maintaining a client focussed approach to my work.
