Personal Profile
I'm a young male therapist, drawn to this career after working in the Scottish arts industry for a number of years. It was my own experience of counselling that gave me a sense of how valuable and vital the work can be.
I am just finishing four years of training at the Counselling and Psychotherapy Training Institute (CPTI) in Edinburgh, and have been working with clients since 2008. As well as individuals and couples, I also currently run a therapy group at the LGBT Centre for Health and Wellbeing in the city.
Work Approach
The modality in which I am trained is Transactional Analysis, which describes itself as 'a theory of personality and communication'. My approach within TA itself would fit the integrative school, which seeks to draw in elements and ideas from a range of sources and backgrounds in order to provide the most appropriate, and affective, support to my clients.
I believe strongly in TA's basis of the therapeutic relationship being as equal as possible, with clients being asked to take responsibility for their work, and to take an active approach to problem solving. The fundamental idea of 'I'm OK, You're OK' is important to me in establishing an effective relationship with clients, and the emphasis of personal choice and control over life decisions is key to my sense of how clients can be helped to bring about the changes that they wish to see in their lives.
I also seek to confront the common stereotype of therapists as being middle-aged men with beards and cardigans, or middle-aged women with chunky jewelery and tie-died skirts. As a young, male practitioner I believe the modern therapy room can handle the full range of contemporary issues, and I seek to address them with respect, commitment, personality, and humour.
