Personal Profile
I have worked within Childrens Services for 18 years and I have seen families and individuals come to terms and overcome very difficult experiences and situations within their lives. I felt drawn into counselling and I have gained the necessary theory and practical experience through my training and placement within the NHS and subsequent private practice post qualification. As part of the training process I have undertaken personal therapy and can honestly say the process works.
I am conscious of the need for my own personal development and attend workshops, seminars and further qualifications such as Anger Management Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy skills and most recently '12 Step' Addiction training based on AA (Alcoholics Annonymous) principles through Action on Addiction which is supportive in breaking any addiction not just alcohol.
To compliment my counselling services I have trained in several holistic therapies which can be included into a session or taken as an individual therapy. This I feel allows me to individualise sessions specifically for my clients changing needs as progress is being made. In addition I offer guided visualisation/meditation and breathing techniques.
Work Approach
The model of counselling I use is called Gestalt which means 'whole'. This style of counselling looks at the whole person in respect of emotions, thoughts, behaviours and so on and it is very holistic, versatile and creative.
Counselling works on the knowledge that you the client knows best and ultimately you are probably already aware of the way forward but this is obscured by the complexities of your presenting problem(s). Through the process of counselling a deeper awareness and understanding can be gained about your relationships with family, friends and work colleagues; why you have made the choices you have in your life; gain an insight into the direction and changes you would like to make now and in the future.
I aim to personalise sessions and focus upon you as an individual. I understand that making the first step towards positive change by undertaking counselling can be very scary and how difficult it can be to talk about personal and emotionally painful aspects of your life, especially in the first few sessions of getting to know each other. 'Where do I start' is often the first question I am asked. The answer is not at the beginning as it is often thought, it is wherever you want to start from - the session belongs to you and you will find your own direction.
I recognise that not everyone is able to put their experiences, thoughts and emotions into words but with support and encouragement this process becomes easier and the way forward clearer.
I also recognise the importance of building a good relationship with my clients and I consider myself to be warm, understanding, approachable, open minded and non-judgemental. I feel I have a wealth of personal experiences to draw from and I am told that I have a good (wicked) sense of humour!
