Personal Profile
I trained as an Art Psychotherapist at Goldsmiths College, University of London. The professional training for art psychotherapists (also known as art therapists) is a Masters degree, which I gained in 1996. Since then I have worked in the NHS within a psychology department, working with older adults with mental health issues and people with learning disabilities. I have worked since 1998 for Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership Trust, and am now Lead Art Psychotherapist in my specialities. For a number of years I worked with severely learning disabled clients who displayed challenging behaviour.
In 2004 I completed a Masters in Research in art psychotherapy, and I am currently studying for a PhD. My research question is 'what makes art psychotherapists resilient?'. I have been a registered supervisor for a number of years, and recently started a private practice which is based in my home in Leicester, and I have conducted a number of training therapies for art therapists/psychotherapists in training.
In my current work I provide inidividual art psychotherapy, and I also work with groups. In my NHS work I currently run a group for older people living in the community who are affected by dementia, a group for women suffering from chronic depression, and a group for women with a learning disability and mental health issues. I also work with family members of clients, many of whom find caring for a person with a mental health issue and/or dementia or a learning disability very hard, and also need support.
Work Approach
My training was pschodynamic, underpinned by psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic theory, covering object relations theories and group analytic theories. My work has become more flexible over time, due to the difficulties of establishing therapeutic relationships with the client groups I have been working with, and I would now describe my work as psychodynamic and person-centred. I have found it useful to acquire additional training to broaden my knowledge base, thus enabling me to work more effectively with my clients.
