Personal Profile

I am a qualified counselling psychologist.  I completed my doctorate in counselling psychology at Teesside University and qualified in 2007.  I have worked for the NHS for 6 years in a CMHT setting and also for a drug and alcohol service where I still work now part-time.  I also do private practice two evenings a week.

Work Approach

My main approach is an integrative approach, where I am informed by several mainstream psychological theories and I adapt the way I work according to my clients needs.  The theories I mainly adhere to are psychodynamic theory, which involves exploring your past and present experiences and family relationships and how these affect your beliefs and behaviour.  I also use elements of cognitive behavioural therapy, and this concentrates on how your thoughts influence your feelings and consequently your behaviour.  CBT theory posits that by challenging and attempting to change your thoughts you can therefore begin to alter your feelings and behaviour.  The way I work in therapy is very much influenced by the core conditions of the person centred approach.  The core conditions of therapy involve having an unconditional postiive regard towards the client, i.e. not being judgmental, showing empathy towards the client and lastly being congruent with the client, i.e. being open and honest within the therapeutic relationship.  Whilst I adapt the combination of these theories for each client, the core conditions are always fully present and seen as an essential element of successful therapy.
