Personal Profile

Hello, and welcome to my page.

When I was a practicing nurse and midwife, I used to notice that the people who healed and recovered most rapidly, were those who were settled, optomistic and relaxed in themselves.  I used to long to know how to help the anxious and frightened patients or those who were depressed to lift their moods and to become more settled inside, so that they too could become happier and more contented with their lives.

In time I embarked onto what has become a 28 year long journey into the fascinating field of counselling and psychotherapy.  I have been in almost continuous training in one method or another (see my qualifications section), and I have learnt a lot through the supervision of my practice and many years of personal therapy.

I am currently studying Sensorimotor Psychotherapy which provides a gentle and fully holistic method for treating trauma and early childhood neglect and trauma.  It is called a 'body therapy' because the therapist encourages the client to pay careful and curious attention to what is going on in their own body in response to thoughts and feelings, and to everyday relationships with oneself and others. (I very rarely touch the people that I work with unless they have given specific permission for this).

You will see from my qualifications that I am now a Senior Registered Practitioner and Registered Spervisor with BACP, and a registered therapist with UKCP.  As I mentioned above, I have over 28 years of experience as a psychotherapist, and over 20 years as a supervisor.

I enjoy working with people, and at the end of many of my working days I have a  feeling of satisfaction as I witness the gradual recovery and growth in those that come to me for their treatment.

Please contact me if you would like to arrange an appointment.  You would not be comitting yourself to any further sessions unless you wanted to do so.

Work Approach

I have discovered over the many years of training and practice, that it is the quality of the relationship that is the keystone to emotional healing, rather than any particular form of training or theoretical model.

It is heart warming to know that many people find healing and recovery through a consistent, kind, gentle, respectful relationship that is held safely in a skilled, and competent professional relationship. This is the sort of relationship that I make every effort to create with any one who comes to see me.  In the background I am guided by the BACP 'Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy'. This is the ethical code from which I base my professional work.

Naturally many people are interested in the way that I work.  My approach is broadly humanistic, which means that  together we would be focussing on emotional, mental, spiritual, relational and physical aspects of your life.

Often our patterns of relating to others come into the relationship that slowly builds with the therapist - which is so helpful.   These patterns can be studied and helpfully changed in the safety of the therapy before being taken back home or to work.

Because I am studying Sensorimotor psychotherapy, I encourage my clients to pay focussed attention to sensations and feelings, thoughts and images, impulses and movements that can arrive in the body at any time.  Many people find this fascinating, and a great way to calm and steady themselves when they feel anxious, depressed, or have unsettling symptoms.

I enjoy passing on some of the theory that I have learnt, and I believe that when we understand how we 'tick' or stop 'ticking' efficiently, we can use this knowledge to repair ourselves, and so if it feels appropriate at the time, I will use charts and diagrammes to explain how and why our bodies and minds  react and behave the way that they do.

If you are curious and would like to know more, or if you would like to arrange an exploratory session with me, you are welcome to contact me .

You will find more information about my practice on my website www.peakdistrictpsychotherapy.co.uk
